Scottie Scheffler details the ‘frustrating’ thing that led to the bunker shot on 13 and his outburst at 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship

Scottie Scheffler recounted his mishap on the 13th hole during the first round of the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship. The American golfer missed the shot and slammed his club into the ground in frustration.

At a press conference after the round, a reporter asked the 28-year-old about the shot on the 13th:

“What was so frustrating about the bunker shot? Was it the sand or the shot you hit?”

Scheffler said it was an “easy shot” but he hit it horribly due to a “lack of focus,” which led to a bogey on the hole.

“It was a pretty easy shot. I hit just a horrible shot. It was kind of a lack-of-focus type of moment. Yeah, I felt like I did a good job getting myself into position where I could make what I thought was going to be an easy par, and then I just hit an awful shot, cost myself one there,” he said (via ASAP Sports).

Despite the mishap, Scottie Scheffler produced a solid performance in the opening round of the tournament. He shot a 4-under 66, finishing in a tie for fifth place. He started with a birdie on the first hole and then carded three consecutive birdies from the fourth to the sixth holes.

Scheffler added another birdie on the 16th hole, but his bogey on the 13th kept him at 4-under 66. Chris Kirk topped the leaderboard, followed by Taylor Pendrith, who tied for second place with Matthieu Pavon and Hideki Matsuyama.
