Rising PGA Tour golfer Jeffrey Guan is partially blind
Doctors have cautioned Australian golfer Jeffrey Guan not to even consider playing golf again for at least six months. He has pledged to return to the sport despite losing sight in his left eye after a bizarre event.
Just one week after making his PGA Tour debut, the 20-year-old was hit by a ball at a pro-am competition. After being sent to Sydney for a second operation, Guan was taken to New South Wales for an emergency surgery and stayed in critical care for two weeks. He described how, after playing his second shot on the third hole, he went to put his club away and was struck. “The instant ringing and pain rushed to my head, and I dropped to the ground,” he said. That night, I underwent my first operation; I was in excruciating pain and worried about what was ahead.
“I was moved to the Sydney Eye Hospital a day later for more testing, therapy, and another surgery. My appointment with the top eye specialists and nurses was scheduled right away.”I was in critical care for the next two weeks following the second surgery. To ensure the stability of my eyeball, this stay was essential. I had entirely lost vision in my left eye, and my eye pressure was far too high to be in any normal state. I was unable to do anything; it was hard to sleep, much less move or eat. I was in terrible discomfort whenever I had to do anything that needed energy.
“The news I had received not only left me completely devastated, but the entire situation left me feeling quite dejected and even a little furious. As you may guess, this entire issue has had a big emotional and mental impact on my family and me in addition to being quite costly. All of my years of training and hard work, as well as the sacrifices made by my family, had just been tossed out the window.Guan, however, has promised to keep playing after his recuperation. “As a kid, I have always had a lot of perseverance and persistence,” he stated. I’m going to keep working hard and try my hardest to fulfill my dream.
These four weeks have been the toughest of my life, but I am stronger mentally and will be ready to conquer any obstacle in the future. I will be back.
Guan was told by doctors not to even think about returning to play golf for at least six months.
